The history of fishing in Margaree
is rich and storied. The Margaree River is the liquid backbone of the
whole area. If you are looking for something close to an angler’s paradise,
with pools to fish all day, then places to relax and have a good time
with friends after the sun goes down, we certainly have what you are
looking for.

Fishing
Seasons:
The Margaree
has two fishing seasons, the early Summer run which
opens June 1st every year. The main river, the Northeast Margaree and
a portion of the Southwest Margaree are 'fly only' from June 1st until
October 31st. The tributaries to the main river are open to other means
during that time. The entire Margaree River System is scheduled fly-fishing
only until the season finally ends on October 31st. The second half
of the season starts mid-late September and into October, Fall is a
spectacular time of year on the Margaree, with the surrounding mountains
seemingly on fire with colour. The fall salmon season on the Margaree
is known for Atlantic salmon which range in size from fifteen to forty
pounds. The largest fish caught was fifty-two and a half pounds, caught
in the month of August.
In the recent past number
of years the focus has been on the "Fall Fishery" due to the number
of larger fish prevalent in the river system at the time. However, if
water levels and conditions are favourable, there is some good fishing
to be had throughout July, August and September as well.
River Guides:
There are plenty of experienced Guides in the
Margaree area, who can give you instruction on basics or, for the advanced
sportsmen, tips on the best pools and local flies. The daily fee is
usually $125-150 (See below / MSA website).

For those who are looking for an afternoon’s
fish, why not try your luck at Old Miller Trout Farm U-Fish, at Margaree
Forks. This is a licensed operation which stocks its ponds with Speckled
and Rainbow trout, where you don’t need a license to reel in a lot of
fish. You may provide equipment, or just bring yourself – limited fishing
equipment is available for rental. Catch and keep only! Pay by the kilogram
(or pound).
Go With the Flow: This
is an annual adventure for women interested in fly fishing. It's a combination
of instruction, fishing and good times. For more information check out
the
Margaree Salmon Association website.
